E-commerce keeps growing. How should we respond?

In a fast-growing online market, brands face unprecedented opportunities and complex threats at the same time. Gray-market (unauthorized) sales, race-to-the-bottom pricing and declining brand trust are problems no one can ignore anymore.

In this MarqVision webinar, we laid out the revenue defense strategies and gray-market responses every e-commerce team should know. Here are the key insights.

– Gray-market strategy from A to Z

Since COVID-19, consumers have shifted quickly from offline to online channels, and e-commerce has grown fast worldwide. The global e-commerce market is growing more than 7% a year, and Korea’s market reached a record of about 250 trillion won in 2024, ranking fifth in the world.

The shift opens new opportunities for brands and individual sellers alike, but it has also intensified gray-market sales and lowest-price competition. With about 30% more online stores opening every year, brands’ distribution order is being shaken.

In our May 29 webinar, “A roadmap for e-commerce success,” MarqVision took a deep look at strategies to compete more effectively online and respond to gray-market sales.

Part 1. The fast-growing online market and its problems

MarqVision uses AI to monitor and respond to the many IP threats that damage brand value. This webinar focused on gray-market sales and reselling, which are spreading quickly online, and stressed not only lost revenue but also the harm to consumers.

As the online market grows, so do distribution channels brands can’t control, and with them the risk of damage to the brand’s image. Using real data, MarqVision showed how serious the gray-market problem has become and why brands need a response strategy.

Part 2. The gray-market threat, seen through data

The problems caused by gray-market sales go beyond lost revenue and affect operations as a whole.

  • Lower PPM: Lowest-price competition intensifies on major platforms such as Coupang and Naver, eroding margins.
  • Lost revenue: Gray-market sellers’ lower prices and reviews push official stores down in search results.
  • Damaged brand reputation: Consumers who buy low-quality or near-expiry products complain directly to the brand, and trust declines.

We shared these problems with real data to show why building a response strategy matters.

Part 3. Gray-market strategy from A to Z

The webinar went beyond diagnosis and shared strategies teams can use in practice, from manual monitoring to using AI to save time and resources.

Charles Shin, a former senior product manager at Coupang who leads MarqVision’s gray-market solution, also gave a live demo, making the strategies even more concrete.

The webinar showed MarqVision’s role not only in protecting brand IP but as a partner thinking about e-commerce growth alongside brands. See the strategies for recovering revenue and strengthening consumer trust by actively tackling gray-market sales.
