  • Sharper real-time detection on Chinese marketplaces and local hiring strengthen takedowns and partnerships in China
  • Counterfeit warehouses raided with China's Ministry of Public Security to stop fakes at the source; enforcement so far worth KRW 1.4 billion
  • The China office plans to hire many more people by the second half of this year to strengthen local partnerships and global IP protection

AI company MarqVision (CEO Mark Lee) announced that it is expanding the China office it opened in May and building a one-stop IP protection system.

The global online counterfeit market is worth thousands of trillions of won, and China is known as one of the countries where the most counterfeits circulate. According to the Korea Customs Service in March, counterfeits seized by Korean customs over the past five years for infringing intellectual property (IP) were worth KRW 2.0902 trillion at market value, and Chinese-made goods accounted for KRW 1.7658 trillion of that, or 84.5%.

MarqVision is expanding its China office not only to detect counterfeits originating in China online more efficiently in real time, but to stop counterfeits circulating in China at the source by stepping up offline enforcement, including on-site raids and investigations.

Because of how Chinese online marketplaces work, takedowns are more effective when counterfeits are detected from inside China and reported in Chinese. To respond quickly to brands that want to protect their IP, MarqVision has strengthened its partnerships with Chinese online marketplaces such as Alibaba, Temu and JD.com, and built a service operations team on the ground in China, greatly increasing its ability to remove counterfeits there.

That's not all. MarqVision can now offer one-stop service that extends to offline enforcement to protect brand IP. Today, MarqVision uses the Seller Intel technology built into its AI SaaS solution, Marq Commerce, to find high-risk sellers with a large share of counterfeit sales online and map their distribution routes. With more local staff from the China office expansion, MarqVision can work more closely with China's Ministry of Public Security, and raid and shut down offline warehouses stocked with high-risk sellers' counterfeits faster and more effectively.

Offline raids give brands real results: they cut off the flow of counterfeits and, through litigation and related work by partner law firms, can even recover the losses counterfeits caused. Some brands using Marq Commerce have already used MarqVision's service to detect high-risk sellers and raid counterfeit factories in China. The enforcement from these actions is worth KRW 1.4 billion.

MarqVision's China office is in Shanghai. Industry experts have joined the local team, including the former head of brand protection for Asia at LVMH and a former head of trust and safety at Temu and TikTok. The company plans to hire many more people by the second half of the year to further strengthen its local partnerships and IP protection.

“To solve the counterfeit problem at its root, real-time detection and takedowns online have to go hand in hand with on-site raids and investigations offline, and strong legal action against malicious sellers in court,” said Mark Lee, CEO of MarqVision. “With AI-based Seller Intel, MarqVision finds high-risk sellers who could never be identified before and connects that data to partner law firms, so brands can even recover the losses caused by counterfeits.”
