AI company MarqVision (CEO Mark Lee) announced that it has launched Impersonation Protection, a service that detects and removes posts and websites impersonating celebrities, companies and institutions.

According to the Korean National Police Agency, illegal activity by fake investment groups, including those impersonating celebrities, caused more than 1,000 reported cases of harm between September and December of last year alone, with losses exceeding KRW 120 billion. Since the second half of last year, the harm has spread rapidly, mainly through social media, making countermeasures urgent.

MarqVision’s Impersonation Protection is an AI solution that detects and analyzes all kinds of impersonation online in real time and removes it by shutting down sites and filing reports on platforms. It is especially well suited to fighting fake company and institution websites that spread through social media ads and other channels that send users to separate landing pages.

With the new service, MarqVision has expanded its detection beyond counterfeits and illegal content to impersonation ads, fake stock investment groups and phishing sites disguised as official websites. Its AI-powered domain screening technology covers more than 99% of domains registered worldwide. The technology can detect lookalike domains with deliberate typos to uncover signs of impersonation.

MarqVision also identifies impersonation by screening websites that contain brand-related keywords, images and content found on search engines, using Logo Detection, which automates brand logo detection, and OCR (optical character recognition) technology. It recognizes more than 15 languages, so it can also detect impersonation ads that spread in multiple languages.

To keep pace with impersonation that is growing more widespread and sophisticated, the service connects to more than 1,500 channels, including global search engines, standalone websites, social media, messengers and video platforms, for broad coverage.
Detected posts are reported and removed using methods chosen for the type of impersonation and the characteristics of each channel. Beyond detection and removal, when a company needs to recover the rights to a domain used by an impersonation website, MarqVision also offers a UDRP (Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy) service. UDRP is a set of rules and administrative procedures for resolving domain impersonation, and it is more efficient in time and cost than settling disputes in court. Because it is an internationally recognized framework that is not limited to any one country, regardless of where the registrar, domain name holder or complainant is located, it can also be used to resolve domain issues that arise abroad.

As impersonation harm increases across industries, the service is expected to be highly useful for internet banks, crypto exchanges, broadcasters, entertainment companies and MCNs (multichannel networks). Many Korean and international fashion and home goods companies, securities and financial firms, and crypto exchanges have already used MarqVision’s service to prevent damage to brand value and harm to customers from impersonation.

Upbit, Korea’s leading crypto exchange, operated by blockchain and fintech company Dunamu, has urged users to be especially careful after financial scams appeared, including fake websites that cleverly mimic its domain to lure users into trading and fake investment groups impersonating its employees. Upbit recently began working with MarqVision to detect such impersonation and remove it quickly, as part of its efforts to create a safe environment that protects investors. Baccarat Korea, the Korean subsidiary of the French luxury brand, was also able to quickly resolve a website domain impersonation problem through MarqVision’s UDRP support service.

About 20 other companies also use Impersonation Protection to block harm. MarqVision is currently offering one UDRP service free of charge, a promotion that runs through the end of this month.

“Information and links impersonating celebrities, companies and institutions tend to spread rapidly in a short time, so it is important to respond proactively before many people are harmed,” said MarqVision CEO Mark Lee. “Impersonation Protection is part of MarqVision’s focus on IP lifecycle management. We will keep advancing our products to become a company that resolves all of the IP-related problems businesses face in one place.”
