IVP (Institutional Venture Partners) is a prominent venture capital firm that has recorded more than 130 IPOs over the past 40 years and partnered with more than 400 companies, including Coinbase, Datadog, DeepL, Discord, Slack and Dropbox. IVP aims to help founders and growing companies take on challenges and achieve exceptional results. Building on that credibility and expertise, IVP publishes an annual list of startups standing out in AI.

As it did last year, IVP has published its list of AI companies again this year. The AI industry has advanced dramatically in a single year, and the list once again highlights new startups and breakthrough progress in generative AI.

When the 2023 list came out, ChatGPT had been on the market for eight months, and other AI models had only been acquired or launched five months earlier. Interest in generative AI was already high, but most AI technology and products were aimed at consumers. And while some companies were starting to see results from early pilots, most startups and solutions were still in the early stages of shaping an AI strategy.

AI has become a major topic in company earnings calls and leadership meetings. As companies discuss how AI solutions can boost efficiency or generate more revenue, budgets for and the value placed on generative AI keep rising. According to ISG’s 2024 survey of IT leaders, generative AI’s share of total enterprise IT budgets is expected to nearly triple from 1.5% to 4.3% between 2023 and 2025.

This gives generative AI startups the opportunity to capture billions of dollars in budget, and shows how fast the technology is moving. At the same time, the challenge of shipping products successfully at the pace of change is growing, so part of these budgets is going to experimental implementations. The pace of change also contributes to high churn among generative AI startups.

IVP’s criteria and its 2024 list

IVP selected new companies in the fast-changing AI field. The 2024 list includes startups that launched and deployed new generative AI products drawing attention from enterprises, or that successfully began their go-to-market (GTM) over the past year.

From its 2024 review, IVP identified and shared two important shifts. First, the companies selected in 2024 are, on average, at an earlier stage than last year. As enterprises gained more experience testing and deploying generative AI, IVP could find younger startups with potential and breakthrough products. Second, the emergence of AI agents, autonomous systems that can handle tasks such as data analysis, decision-making and strategy refinement, is worth noting. Early enterprise use cases span many areas, from personalized customer support and automated outbound campaigns to spotting key trends in customer data to inform business decisions. IVP expects AI agent capabilities to advance quickly in the coming months.

IVP’s selection criteria for AI companies are:

  1. Strong recommendations from, or deployment by, enterprises and C-level executives
  2. Strong purchase intent from enterprises
  3. Driving rapid revenue growth or serving top-tier customers in their industry
  4. At least $5 million in venture funding (disclosed or undisclosed)
  5. Based in the US or Europe

The AI companies selected by IVP

This year’s list was divided into seven broad categories, including Revenue, Marketing and Financial, and MarqVision was named in the Chief Legal or Compliance Officer category.

Last year’s selections focused mainly on legal counsel and chief legal officers, simplifying lawyers’ work and protecting sensitive information. This year, legal compliance was added as more generative AI startups help companies understand and comply with regulations. Generative AI solutions in this category make repetitive manual work and traditional tasks more efficient.

MarqVision’s technology and impact as an AI company

MarqVision focuses on protecting companies’ intellectual property (IP) with AI. It automates the entire process from detecting counterfeits sold online to reporting them, and its technology also detects and acts on pirated content and software. Its advanced technology can monitor registered IP assets in fine detail. It also turns IP infringement evidence into data, generates reports automatically and enables fast enforcement.

The IVP list says this about MarqVision:

“We use [the AI solution] to tackle counterfeits. Counterfeits are one of our company’s biggest problems, causing lost revenue and damaging brand recognition. [The AI solution] automatically removes 13,000+ listings per year. In the past, our internal team could only handle part of the work because scrolling through listings one by one across many e-commerce sites and marketplaces was so tedious. This platform saved us the equivalent of hiring 5–7 new FTEs, and it has made our team more efficient. It frees our team to focus on more important work.”_

The future of AI and the value it brings

The generative AI companies IVP selected in 2023 have grown remarkably over the past year. Some raised more than $1.4 billion or established themselves as industry leaders, and they appeared on major lists such as The Cloud 100, the Forbes AI 50 and The Information 50. Lexion and Ultimate AI also announced acquisitions, further highlighting their success.

IVP has partnered with innovative startups from last year’s list, including DeepL, Glean, Grammarly, Jasper and Pigment. This year’s generative AI selections are also showing notable results in their fields. In the Financial category, Brex stood out as an AI-powered spend management platform offering corporate cards, expense management, travel management and bill pay. In the Information category, Perplexity and Superhuman were selected. Perplexity is an AI search engine that helps users find information online easily, and Superhuman automates email management to boost team productivity.

Having moved past early obstacles such as data security concerns, AI is becoming essential for helping companies focus on high-value work and work more efficiently. Advanced technology and bold experiments like these are bringing major change across the AI industry. The AI companies IVP selected are leading that change, and their next results are worth watching.
