Navigating the Challenges of Virality

Houndsy is a premium pet care brand built on thoughtful design and functional innovation. Their smart feeders, engineered for convenience, hygiene, and portion control, quickly propelled the brand into the spotlight. Demand surged...but so did attention from counterfeiters. What started as a viral success soon became a battle to protect Houndsy’s reputation, revenue, and customers.

When Viral Growth Invites Copycats

Houndsy is a premium pet care brand known for its beautifully designed and innovative smart feeders. Built to make feeding routines cleaner, easier, and more consistent for both pets and their owners, Houndsy’s products allow pet owners and veterinarians to set specific portion sizes for pets’ meals, using hygienic plastic and silicone containers to safely store food. The brand took off quickly after a TikTok video showcasing its product went viral.

But Houndsy’s rising profile brought an entirely new challenge: counterfeits. Within weeks of going viral, exact replicas of their smart feeder began appearing across online marketplaces.

Counterfeiters weren’t only copying Houndsy’s products -- they were producing their own lookalikes and using original photography and videos to sell them. These sellers blurred the lines between real and fake, leaving customers confused and eroding Houndsy’s brand integrity.

"In early 2024, we began to see counterfeit Houndsy products online. They started to create duplicate versions of their product, and then they started to create their own original images and videos of their counterfeit product. And in that case, I couldn't use a simple copyright infringement to shut them down."

The result was serious: reputational damage and topline revenue loss.

Why Manual Enforcement Wasn’t Enough

As counterfeit versions of Houndsy’s smart feeders began flooding the market, the team’s first instinct was to handle enforcement in-house. They started tracking infringing listings manually, filing takedown requests one by one.

However, it quickly became clear that this approach wasn’t sustainable. The volume of fakes kept rising -- and each time a listing was removed, another would appear on a different platform. The process was slow, reactive, and resource-draining. Worse, many infringers were using their own images and videos of the counterfeit product, making copyright-based takedowns nearly impossible to enforce.

"My cofounder and I poured our blood, sweat, and tears into creating these products, and to see that ripped away ... .it was devastating."

The brand’s hard-won momentum was at risk. Customers were being misled, revenue was being siphoned off, and Houndsy’s reputation, built on trust and quality, was beginning to erode.

It was no longer enough to chase infringers one by one. Houndsy needed a brand protection solution that was proactive, automated, and capable of scaling with the business.

After evaluating several options, one stood out.

"We needed a brand protection solution that would automatically detect, enforce, and shut down these counterfeiters. There was only one [solution] that met the demanding needs of Houndsy. MarqVision."
